Mission Earth
Sustainability is a buzzy word that means different things to different people. As one of our core values, we want to break down what it means to us.
WHAT does sustainability mean to us?
Our land has been severely degenerated since even before the Industrial Revolution began. We know that FIRST we must regenerate before we can sustain. To us, sustainability means honoring nature and its plants in their purest form. It means doing our best to not only leave no trace but to leave our planet better than we found it, in a regenerative state, a net positive loop for generations to come. To us, sustainability means regenerate first, sustain second.
WHY does this matter to us?
Founder Kayla Clements spent the summer of 2017 on a #vanlife journey camping, hiking, and exploring her way through nine states and twelve of America’s National Parks. From the world's longest slot canyon in the deserts of Utah to the giant old-growth trees in the Pacific Northwest to the rocky cliffs of California, Luna Volta was ideated surrounded by the natural beauty of our Earth. Standing upon the top of Glacier National Park at a star party in Montana, where Kayla was able to view the Andromeda Galaxy through a giant telescope and then with the naked eye, her appreciation for our tiny world within a vast solar system was amplified. Connecting to the land, the sea, and the sky in this way awakened a deep desire from within her to dedicate her energy to honoring our Earth.
Luna Volta was born out of this desire and a core part of our mission relates back to doing our part for our planet, Earth.
HOW does this matter to us?
Our entire supply chain for our premium wellness hemp oil, NOVA, is conscious.
Every decision from sourcing to packaging is made with the planet in mind. We strive for recyclable, reusable, or biodegradable packaging options wherever possible.
Hemp - Hemp is the only plant that can feed you, house you, clothe you, and heal you. Our ideal vision of a hemp lifecycle is one in which the plant is grown regeneratively to help foster healthier soil and then 100% of plant particles are converted into environmentally friendly products housed in zero waste packaging. We work with small, family farms in the USA who share our belief in organic, regenerative grow practices.
MCT - Our MCT oil is organically sourced.
Bottles - Our glass bottles are sourced from within the USA via a pre-cycled packaging program. Precycling is a pre-consumer recycling initiative that involved re-purposing unused surplus goods. Our bottles are intercepted before becoming waste, put to their intended use, and can then be recycled or reused further post-consumer.
Screen printing - Our bottles are printed locally in CA using UV-based inks. This is to limit our use of paper labels. “As UV inks are cured using UV lamps, UV printing offers the lowest carbon footprint option possible.”
Boxes - Our boxes are handmade in CA (<10mi. from our HQ!) from 100% post-consumer waste (PCW). They are 100% biodegradable, plantable (yes, you read that right!), printed with soy-based inks, and naturally colored with earth pigments. Even the water used to make the 100% recycled handmade paper is reclaimed and recycled back into the next batch. Each sheet is then embedded with wildflower seeds, beneficial to the declining bee population. Please plant our boxes in 1/4” soil, water daily, give positive affirmations, and watch wildflowers grow.
Shipping supplies - NOVA is shipped in 100% post-consumer waste (PCW) recycled shipping boxes and protected by 100% recycled newsprint. The boxes are sealed with water-activated kraft paper tape and 100% recycled shipping labels. Please reuse our shipping box.
Our microgravity bath bombs, the PLANETS.
Each bath bomb is hand pressed in San Diego, CA with USDA certified organic and non-GMO ingredients, without parabens, sulfates, or silcones. Our hemp is: full spectrum, small batch, organically + regeneratively grown, and ethically sourced in the USA. Each batch of oil used to make the bath bombs is rigorously third party tested to ensure potency and that it is pesticide + solvent-free.
We are proud to offer a plastic-free safety wrap. Each PLANET is sealed in a compostable clear plant-based/food-safe bag made from NatureFlex (an at-home certified compostable material made from renewable wood pulp that is sustainably harvested from FSC managed forests, EN13432 and ASTM D6400). Fully biodegradable and compostable. NatureFlex can decompose in less than 45 days.
Each bomb is then nestled in our biodegradable and compostable box made from hemp inspired by beehives and turtle shells. The boxes are made and printed less than 10mi from our San Diego HQ. Thank you for composting.
We are continuously looking for ways upon which to improve our practices to best honor and protect the planet we call home. If you have suggestions, please reach out to us via our Contact page.
