In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.
— John Muir
Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
— John Lubbock, The Use Of Life

And so with the sunshine and the great bursts of leaves growing on the trees, just as things grow in fast movies, I had that familiar conviction that life was beginning over again with the summer.

All in all, it was a never-to-be-forgotten summer — one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going — one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.
— L.M. Montgomery, Anne's House of Dreams

On Martinique:

“In 2017, I left my full time job and landed on the French island of Martinique for a week.

My partner and I went for the Caribbean surfing paradise and were met instead by the summer rain. It down poured the first four days straight. On the final day of the trip, the skies cleared for us. There was no surf but, determined to make the most of our trip, we hiked - to the highest elevation on the island, Mount Pelée. The hike is only about 5mi long but with a 3,400m elevation gain, it is by no means an easy hike. Portions of the trail near the top are two-way vertical rock climbs meaning hikers are making their way down at the same time you are gaining elevation so each step needs to be meticulously placed to hold you while others pass. It was the longest and most strenuous hike I had attempted to that point and when the heavy mist and wind rolled in, the top of the volcano could disappear from sight within minutes. When the clouds did break, I was rewarded with the most beautiful views of the radiating rainforest I hiked up through and could even see the neighboring island of Guadeloupe from the top.

The hike up to Mount Pelée is easily one my favorite trails I’ve conquered. It is the trail that ignited my curiosity for hiking and inspired the stint of #vanlife I would embark on a few months later. Our summer lookbook embraces my favorite qualities of the season - nature, exploration, and a period for chasing whatever calls you. I hope you enjoy the lush landscapes of the beautiful island of Martinique as much as I do.”

Mount Pelée is the third deadliest volcano in the world, dormant since its most recent eruption in 1932. “The volcano has been dormant since its most recent eruption in 1932. The stratovolcano's eruption in 1902 destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre, killing 28,000 people in the space of a few minutes, in the worst volcanic disaster of the 20th century.” [Wikipedia]
